On September 19, 2024, the HAB gym at St. Benedict’s Prep buzzed with excitement as the Gray Bee Girls Varsity Volleyball Team faced off against the Bayonne Bees in a highly anticipated “Battle of the Bees”, regular-season match. While the night ultimately ended in disappointment for the Gray Bees, the determination and heart displayed by the team highlighted a bright future ahead.
The goal for the Gray Bees, who entered the game with a 1-3 record, was to defeat the 3-1 Bees. Support was strong, but Roselyn Gomez ’26 (#15), a star in the front line, was unable to participate due to a serious illness, which presented a significant obstacle for the Gray Bees. Throughout the game, the squad felt her absence as backups filled the void and led them. The Gray Bees were eager to rise to the occasion despite this setback. The two notable hitters, Empress-Irene Larkins ’26 (#13) and Celine Argueta ’26 (#1), who are renowned for their strong hits over the net and capacity to motivate the team at crucial moments, were the center of attention.
First Set
The Bayonne Bees dominated the first several minutes of the game. Lilah Gomez (#13) of Bayonne didn’t take long to establish herself, launching an array of strong hits that caught the Gray Bee defense by surprise. Early on, the Gray Bees had trouble finding their rhythm, and there were times when communication broke down. St. Benedict’s was further unsettled by the Bayonne Bees’ early advantage. The Gray Bees lost the opening set 25-10 despite some strong efforts, including some excellent digs from their libero, Valeria Maldonado ’26 (#11).
Second Set
For the Gray Bees, the second set was a turning point. The encouraging cheers of their peers seemed to give them renewed energy as they entered the court. Arielle Lopina ’26 (#9) took control as setter and captain, orchestrating plays with increasing confidence. A pivotal play was made by freshman Lilliana Gallo (#4), who excited the fans and the entire team with a stunning service ace. The Gray Bees suddenly rediscovered their rhythm, taking the lead for the first time. St. Benedict’s performed several standout plays that demonstrated their skill and grit. But the Bayonne Bees never gave up and retaliated with strong moves. St. Benedict’s lost the set 25-17, despite putting up a fierce fight in a close match.
After the match, I caught up with Gray Bee Captain, Arielle Lopina ’26. When asked about the team’s performance and plans for improvement, she said, “For practices, I think we’ve just got to play under more high-stress environments. So, instead of just having a freeform scrimmage, maybe the scrimmage that we have we are at 20-20. So, more high-pressure situations to get the girls to realize that they have to lock in and have to start right, instead of wasting 5 points and then lock in.”
The Bayonne Bees celebrated their 2-0 victory as the final whistle blew Even though the outcome was disappointing, the Gray Bees remain optimistic for the future because of the team’s enthusiasm and determination. In talking with the team, it was clear that the unwavering support from fans reminded the Gray Bee Girls Varsity Volleyball Team that they are part of a community that believes in their potential.
The Gray Bees will be returning to the court, on Monday, September 23 at 4:00 p.m. at Bloomfield High School.
