9/11 Will Always Matter
The events of 9/11 matter very much to me, even though they occurred before I was even born. The things that happened on that day have shaped our lives in many different ways. Things like airport security or security, in general, have been improved. There was even a whole war fought against terror in Afghanistan, and there is still conflict occurring there today. The events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, will forever have an effect on how we live our lives.
To begin, airport security has been dramatically increased since the attack on the World Trade Center. According to U.S. News and World Report, the federal government in the decade after the attack spent $62 million on upgrading security in airports. These improvements since then have seemed to be permanent. Some new airport renovations have included these security measures in the design of the airport, proving that these improvements are here to stay.
The attack on the World Trade Center began what then-President Bush called the “War on Terror” in Afghanistan. The U.S. spent trillions of dollars on equipment and soldiers to fight overseas. While this is a common occurrence in almost every war, what many people do not think about is “Was this ‘War on Terror’ successful?” There are many different ways of answering this question, some may say yes because al-Qaeda was beaten and Osama bin Laden was killed. While others may say no because there is still the looming threat that the U.S. will be attacked again. This conflict in Afghanistan that occurred because of the attack on 9/11 has undoubtedly been one of the most important events to happen in my lifetime. Plus, the U.S. has been in Afghanistan for just about as long as I’ve been alive.
All in all, the events of 9/11 have had a very big impact on my life and they matter very much to me because of that. From the increased security at airports and across just about any form of security, to the “War on Terror” in Afghanistan, the events of 9/11 have had much more impact on my life than any other influence, even if it happened before I was born. What happened on 9/11 will always be important to me, just like so many others.
