This summer I was lucky enough to have a professional development experience—sponsored by SBP which offers funding for staff professional development—at The Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vt.

In addition to offering a two-year Master’s degree, a one-year certificate and a two-year Associate’s certificate, the school also offers week-long Summer Workshops on various subjects with top artists in their field. I worked on three projects in the Graphic Memoir Workshop.

The first was a new chapter of my graphic memoir/novel entitled “Water I’ve Loved” which is being serialized online by Mutha Magazine.

The second was an “Incomplete” Graphic History of SBP entitled “In the Midst of It All” which will have 40 panels published online at Spiralbound on Medium once I finish it (hopefully late 2018).

I worked on my “thumbnail sketches” (basically a visual outline) while in Vermont for that project and submitted it to the editor at Spiralbound who gave me the green light to finalize it. Additionally, I came up with a new series of 4-panel comics entitled “L’il Me, Big Me” which I’ve started to post on Instagram.

The school’s well-equipped studios are open 24/7 so people can work all day and late into the night. My fellow artists were a very dedicated, hard-working group and I benefited from their feedback and from observing their process in their own work. The school also has one of the largest collections of Graphic Books in their Schultz Library.
